Delores’ room was cold, and it was too early for Cook’s hot-water bottle. She took another oversized jumper from her case, put it on over her other clothes and flung herself onto her bed, saluting the dolls on the other bed as she landed. Lanky doll turned away. Delores should have been shocked. Afraid. But she was all out of shock and fear.

Something dug into her hip as she turned on her side to settle down. She reached into her trouser pocket and pulled out the small carved figure that Bartleby had given her. She traced her finger over the shield it was holding, and the symbol engraved on its surface. She placed it on the bed along with Angel Barguest’s calling card. The card had looked new when Angel had given it to her: crisp white with freshly embossed lettering. Now it was brown with age and dirt, the edges thin and disintegrating. A sickening wave of exhaustion worked its way up her body, her arms fell like lead bars by her side and her eyelids forced themselves shut against all of her good intentions.
